Swimming… open water!?

I have completed a few 5km running events in the past and although I would love to be able to run bigger events (big respect for marathon runners!), the fact is that my knee and back are not too happy about this…

The closest I got to this was walking 26.2 miles (40km) during the night as part of the wonderful MoonWalk event in Edinburgh a few years ago.  The atmosphere at this event is fantastic and it is a great challenge for those not keen on running… it is coming soon to Edinburgh and entries are still open!

The challenge

I have always loved swimming and I have previously joined the Swimathon… but this year I fancied a new challenge, so why not swimming outdoors? So here it is, this year’s challenge is Open Water Swimming :o)

After searching the web, I found Great Swim who organises open water swimming events all over the country.  I was chuffed to find an event near Edinburgh, and even more so when I found out it was in the beautiful Loch Lomond!!  Now, more and more people are telling me lochs are indeed colder than open sea, but I guess that is what you have to pay for the view! :o)

Although I am a keen swimming, I am a bit daunted about the cold water… let’s face it, I have grown up swimming in a bath (the Mediterranean Sea!), so using a wet suit to swim is a whole new world to me.

Currently stepping up my training and going for long swims at the pool.  Next step is finally getting my wetsuit organised and joining a few open water training sessions… I really hope this doesn’t put me off!!

I will be swimming in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support to help them to carry on with the wonderful work they do.  So if you think my challenge is worth a few pennies, or even if you don’t but you would like to support Macmillan’s work, please feel free to look at my fundraising page and donate a few quid.  You can find it here https://www.justgiving.com/Esther-Hernandez/

I will keep you updated with my training and open water sessions.  In the meantime, here are some links where you can find more:
